Cash for Clunkers: Is it a lemon?
Thursday, 08. 6. 2009 – Category: Driving
Not even the most optimistic greens could have predicted that the federal government's cash-for-clunkers program would work this well — at last count more than 240,000 Americans have traded in their clunkers for more fuel efficient cars, and the program has already burned through its first $1 billion of funding.
Have you traded in a clunker? If so, share you opinion in the comments section below.

I live in Chicago, Illinois, and I traded in a 1993 Ford Carriage full size van for a 2009 Flex. The new Flex gets 17 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. I’m very pleased with the Cash for Clunkers program, because my van was a piece of junk that needed a lot of work, and $4500 is way more than I could have dreamed of getting for it on a normal trade in.

The third day the program is avilable I went to Honda delareship to trade in my town car. I got about 18 miles per gallon. My cash for cluner is not full amount 4500. But the dealer ship is not set up properly, so the saleman want me to come back in next week. I went to ford delarship and they have all set up and all I have to do is filled out some paper work and apply the cash discount for my old clunker. Very easy process and love my new car

I live in Louisiana and have an old clunker
They say that you have to have a gas gustler to be accepted a clunker
but isn’t it misleading CLUNKER?
It doesn’t have great gas mileage but havent tried a car dealer but looked on the internet and our car doesn’t qualify as a clunker
it’s 16 years old and the liights on the car doesn’ t work half the time so many things inside is wrong with it

I just did the cash for clunkers on Saturday. I had a 1996 Ford Explorer that was a wonderful car. Very dependable. Little things started going wrong with it this past year – nothing that I need to sink money into but this past week the power steering went out. We managed to get it to the Honda dealer and I bought a Fit Sport. I live in Alabama and it is a great program.

I did cash for clunkers. I had a 1998 Saturn SC2, that I loved, but the transmission was going out. So I cashed that clunker for a prius. It’s a great program – hopefully the government can keep it going.

It really does help in protecting and saving environment!!

It’s really a narrowly focused thing. It certainly helps the auto makers, but there are a small number of people in a position to take advantage of it.The environmental benefits are marginal as well.

This is great idea for the environment and green energy lovers like myself. This is already proving to be successful and cleaning the air we all breath.

I traded in my 2000 ford explorer, I just tired of getting hit with the 60-120 dollar fill-ups. I live in indiana around hobart so I took it on route 30 and found a chevy dealer that was taking the cars. I was explained that if I get a higher mpg car I could get a better tax credit, so I picked the chevy cobalt. I drove off the lot a little taken back cause it gets around 10+mpg than my old truck in the city, plus I was speeding a little because I was used to my trucks heavy pedal. I would say it was a pretty good setup, no real issue with paperwork or down payments. I would do it again given the chance.

Cash for clunkers might have some benefits but there are quite a few drawbacks as well that the media hasn’t really mentioned.
Once the funding goes away, all of the manufacturers will be in the dumps yet again. It was pretty bad for the big three before the program, and it will go back to those levels again or probably worse. The cash injection was like wringing out a sponge that is even more drier afterwards.
Next, all of the people who now have much better fuel economy, performance, and reliability will drive much more than before. The claim that the fleet of vehicles will be better for the environment will be offset by a larger rate of consumption.
Also, one of the cars that people are buying is the honda civic. Note that this car is built in canada (north of toronto).
The us auto industry and economy are quite complicated beasts and there is no magic 4500 dollar bullet that will solve all of their current problems.
