How Smart are SmartCars

Have you seen a SmartCar yet?  If you haven't, you certainly will soon.  The ultra-compact two-seater, developed by Mercedes Benz, is scheduled to hit the US market starting in January 2008.  The SmarCar is designed to get between 40-60 miles per gallon, easy to drive park for city dwellers, and baby boomers.

If you've traveled outside of the US to Europe or Asia you've probably seen these cars zipping around city centers.  Over 770,000 Smart cars have been sold in 36 countries to date.

Will the car make an impact here in the US?  Many think so given the cars cool factor, rising price of oil and the acceptance of 'commuter class' vehicles.  Most concerns center around safety, storage (two seater and tiny trunk) and size (It's about 3 feet shorter than the Mini Cooper).
