PDX Gets Industrious at InterBike
Portland government and private business took a strong stance at the annual InterBike conference held in Las Vegas, Sept. 24-27th. InterBike, one of the largest bike-industry conferences in the world, is highly technical consisting of seminars, outdoor demonstration and vendors from across the country. Maria Thi Mai, Sam Adams’ senior policy director, attended the event and states in her blog that Portland hopes to host InterBike in 2008.
According to Bike Portland, http://bikeportland.org/2006/09/21/pdc-works-on-bike-industry-sets-sights-on-vegas/ PDC was also at InterBike, in a calculated attempt to attract more big players in the biking industry to Portland. PDC’s goals at InterBike were also supported by Adams’ office, which back in February outlined a nine-step plan http://portlandtransport.com/archives/2006/02/9_points_to_pla.html to “Go Platinum” and establish Portland as the most “bike-friendly” major city in the nation.
Bill Nesper, program manager for League of American Bicyclists, the organization behind the “bike-friendly” designations, states that “there aren’t any specific measures to…distinguish between a Gold or Platinum city.” However, “in a Platinum level Bicycle Friendly Community bicycling is the BEST option for travel.”
