Stay Safe on Your Bike This Winter

With winter rapidly approaching, and our autumn weather degrading just as quickly, cyclists need to be prepared for the upcoming cold and wet weather.  Luckily, there is plenty riders can do to be safe and comfortable through the winter months.

To stay warm it’s always been important to wear layers.  When biking, it’s no different.  Using thin nylon and spandex layers can not only help preserve your heat, but it won’t be as cumbersome as some bulkier clothing can be.  There are also specially designed hats, hoods, and balaclavas that can fit underneath bike helmets, which is much safer than forgoing a helmet to wear an oversized wool cap.  Gloves are an important part of any ensemble as well, as maintaining manual dexterity is essential when riding.  Staying dry is just as crucial as staying warm, and it can be done simply enough with lightweight raingear and waterproof shoes.

Proper clothing won’t be a cyclist’s only concern as winter sets in.  Knowing your own physical limits, and knowing when NOT to ride if it is too wet or too cold can save you from extreme fatigue and dangerous situations.  Also, being aware of the shortened days, and that getting caught riding in the dark is a distinct possibility is critical.  Wearing bright and reflective material, as well as acquiring lights and reflectors for your bicycle can go a long way in making your riding safe for you and the cars around you.

With prudent planning and a little preparation you can continue your safe and comfortable riding habits into what’s sure to be a wet and cold winter.
