The Worst Commute in Town

According to new data released from the Intelligent Transportation Systems Laboratory at Portland State University, the afternoon commute on I-5 northbound is the worst in the entire Portland metro area.

From The Portland Tribune-

The average speed of vehicles traveling the six and a half miles on I-5 from the I-84 interchange to the Interstate Bridge is a snail’s pace 22 miles per hour between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays.

No immediate plans to alleviate the situation are in the works, as Oregon Department of Transportation engineer, Dennis Mitchell, explains, “We’re not widening the freeways.  The regional decision was to limit the freeways to three lanes in each direction plus auxiliary lanes.  Right now every freeway has a bottleneck, and that’s not going to go away.”
